Over the weekend Alderman Harry Osterman released an email detailing many updates on crimes in the 48th ward. One of the highlights concerned a recent police sting at Thorndale and Winthrop. Many residents have been upset about drug dealing in the area, especially this intersection where Swift Elementary School is located. The 20th District received information about dealing at this location and they sought out special CPD assistance in the matter.
According to the report, a 30-year-old male was arrested after a CPD narcotics squad witnessed him in several transactions. On the man, who is a known gang member, they found “crack” cocaine, cannabis and a handgun. He has had a history of prior felonies and is being charged as an armed habitual criminal, a class-X felony. This is the most serious felony class in Illinois, just short of first degree murder. There is no probation and carries a mandatory sentencing of 6-30 years.
In the email, Harry Osterman said, “Public safety remains my top priority as your Alderman. There have been some recent court developments and arrests of which I want to make you aware. My staff and I continue to work closely with the Chicago Police Department to follow through on crimes and criminal cases impacting our neighborhood.”
