The folks at Uptown Update today posted an article pointing out a major change coming soon to Broadway that we were not aware of – the street will be undergoing a “road diet,” as they’re calling it.

I would like to see this go all the way to Devon.

Any plans for that are at least a few years off. Chicago Dept of HED is doing a study about what needs to be done with the Broadway corridor. Results will be avaiable Q1 2014. That may lead to actual plans which then will need to be funded.
In the meantime, use Kenmore and Winthrop. They are safe, low-traffic alternatives from Leland all the way to Granville.

Glad the initial run is being conducted in Uptown, its best to watch how it shakes out somewhere else. The bike lane is larger, which is much easier for both vehicle and bikes, especially American SUVs. I would like to not see people using it as a running lane and actually place fines on pedestrian use.

I have always been super scared to drive down Broadway because those 2 lanes are narrow, lots of bikers, AND the lanes shift all the time, causing traffic backups when one car is inevitably partly in both lanes. Annoying, and hopefully this works!

Good for Uptown. That’s one stretch of road that’s unfriendly to bikes, cars, AND pedestrians.

Any info on the installation of the red light at Berwyn and Broadway. Work seems to be at a halt for whatever reason.

What we really need is for Broadway to be returned to nature so that trees and animals are the only things on it. Cause like, it’s like, bad like when like, cars and stuff, and like, people with jobs, need to like, get places.

So traffic will move as fast as the 36 with no way around it? Or does the city assume people will not use a turn lane (although illegal) to get around a bus? Sounds more dangerous to me.

  • Lee Crandell

Sounds like a win-win — the roadway will be more efficient and safe, moving more cars because of the turn lane, and it’ll be more pedestrian- and bike-friendly. Hoping it’ll be a generally more pleasant street for everyone!
