New businesses are always good, but we’ve got enough Asian restaurants. It’s too bad it’s not something more interesting.

I totally agree! I would love to have some variety besides asian!

I think it shows racial prejudice and a want of palate on your part to lump Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, etc. into a single category of “Asian” – as if all their cultures and foods are the same.

        • Hedda Cabbidge

Come on. It’s no more racially prejudiced than to speak in general terms about “Latin American” or “Central European” cultures or cuisines. Just a general category based on geography. Do we need to name all of the national cuisines every time? I think most people realize there are varieties within each category. Calling it racial prejudice is just too easy in this case.

agreed. Jin is our nice midpriced thai, mei shung is our takeout, and pasteur is our fancy

Yes. Or at least something other than the Thai/Sushi combo that is most prolific. I wouldn’t mind some Szechuan or having a pho place closer to Granville, but I could really use a great barbecue place.

    • bdickus2001

What kind of restaurants would you suggest, in their place?

  • Scotty

I agree..Asian food is great, but it seems like the market here is saturated with Asian places, many of which seem to be empty most of the time. Our usual Asian hangout is Hello Sushi on Devon.

  • JLS

Sushi Thai is 6230, not 6320. 6320 is still Broadway Animal Hospital.

My reaction exactly! So many Asian restaurants in the area already, although maybe they’ll be inspired to ‘up their game’ with more competition. Mei Shung’s portions are too small for the price – even if you pay for extra meat, tofu, etc., Wing Hoe’s offers great portions, but their menu has remained essentially unchanged for decades (and since the new owners/manager took over, let’s just say customers are not always treated warmly). JIn’s quality can be a bit inconsistent, and we haven’t even bothered to try the ‘new’ Pasteur based on bad feedback from friends (too pricey based on marginal service, inconsistency).
Unless our local representatives actively seek to recruit specific types of restaurants/businesses to the area (still waiting for a Whole Foods/Trader Joe’s (or both)), we may continue to see this pattern. I guess we should be grateful (and encouraged) to see any new businesses opening.

I would hula-hoop naked at the corner of Granville and Broadway for a Trader Joes or Binny’s to open up in the neighborhood.

      • bdickus2001

I like Trader Joe’s too, but get over it. Our neighborhood does not fit their target demographic. We also don’t need more liquor stores up here, no matter how “nice”.

Someone said it’s racial to lump Asian together? Oh get over it! Yes there are a lot of “Thai” restaurants around here which I understand that is what the bulk of it is but there is a Korean Wings Restaurant opening too,so yea it’s safe to say we have too many “Asian” restaurants and we do need a variety-what about Middle Eastern? This neighborhood IS saturated with Asian restaurants, yes. With rumors of Hamilton’s closing we need a good bar and grill place like Lady Gregory.
