Shots fired

Monday, May 2, 2011
By Daniel Zagotta

We were walking north along Sheridan around 6:30PM today and shots had just been fired in front of the shopping center at Winona + Sheridan in Uptown. About 4 guys were standing around saying they were shot at, and the door of the currency exchange was blown out. 3 squad cars were there in moments. Doesn’t look like anyone was hit.

    Glad you're ok hollywood:)

I am new to this area and it appeared safe.. Does this happen often..

    Concered resident

  • Alek

The immediate area where this took place isn't awful but is far from safe. There are quite a few SEC8, SRO, etc trouble buildings nearby, especially south and gang activity from south between Argyle and Lawrence spills over pretty regularly.

I live next door to where this shooting happened (in 5050) and I spoke with some of the witnesses after everyone left last night. Apparently a woman was shot during this incident by the man she was with. It was stray bulletts that blew out the door at the currency exchange and also hit a car parked in the parking lot. Unfortunaltely the shooter was able to get away before the police showed up.

I have an acupuncture clinic at 5054 N. Sheridan and watched the whole drama unfold. As awful as it was to see, it is an extremely rare occurrence to see any problems , outside of a bit of panhandling on this block.

raitaddi27: To answer your questions…..It's not……it's happening more often every day since 2006 that I'm aware of. Move!

"extremely rare occurance". You're fooling yourself. Thanks for promoting your bidness though. This used to be called the "Edgewater Crime Blotter", then "Edgewater Community Buzz". I understand the name change, truly, but there are other ways to advertise. Referrals usually work better.

Signed, Two guys that were interested in me up in "da hood" refused to accept the fact that they lived amongst random gunfire outside their front window and lost me.

    KEEP IT REAL!

@Alek – thank you much for your candor. However, you are sounding a little bit to "negative" albeit real for Edgewater/Uptown taste.

(has it been getting worse since 2006?, maybe in Uptown, but not in Edgewater, but this is Uptown we are talking about, has anyone else noticed 2006 as a significant year?)

(bidness, oh yeah you mean business, what does he mean other ways to advertize? Referrals work better? That doesnt make sense. Ok this blog is an edgewater community booster and does report crime, Uptown Update serves the same role)

    (Is No different two guys?
Or Two were interested in No Different? Wow run-on sentence…
Its lost its meaning, Ok, Two were interested in No Different but refused to accept the violence and then they lost No Different because of their nonacceptance of violence, what did they lose?)

I dont think Alek sounds too negative for edgewater/uptown,
    have you read Uptown Update
no different? Thats just par for the course, concentrated poverty attracts crime and produces it.

Oh no different was talking to mark about the self promotion,
still no different needs to make it more clear who he is talking to. I usually dont try to address a bunch of people all at once atleast without making it clear who im addressing from one sentence to the next.

    Is Mark the blogmaster then?
    Hmmmmm. Confusing still…..

  • Alek

Let me clarify, i have never once felt bad about living in the area and look forward to staying in the immediate area once my lease is up this summer. There is a gang presence and that leads to inevitable flare ups but i've never been bothered and have found the area in general to be improved since 2006 (not sure where that date came from above). The increased foot traffic from the new dominicks has helped. A daylight shooting on this block is not the everyday occurence that it is a few blocks south.

  • jeffo

    Glad to hear it alek
im sure the sommerset closing down helped a little too.

Seeing how busy Tweet and Big Chicks is I think more positive retail would help a great deal on that stretch of Sheridan.

The violence surrounding a dice game doesnt surprise me, I have seen a couple of fools throwing dice at kenmore and argyle and I always call it in when I see it.
I dont live there, but I pass through and figure might as well pitch in.

Whats funny is that I mentioned that I called 911 on a dice game on city data forum and someone actually tried to chide me about it.

thanks Mark and Alec.. I lived in NYC for 10 years and saw some "questionable things" happen there. Chicago is a big city and I am not naive to what goes on. But in general I feel safe in my new neighbourhood. thanks for the reassurance!

  • raitaddi27

sorry Alek I spelled your name wrong:)

  • Alek

@Jeffo re: somerset, i know some of the local block clubs wrote to mary ann smith pleading that the property be restored to non-subsidized rentals with ground level retail. Last i heard she had been making an effort to rezone the property so it could no longer be used as a health care facility. Hopefully Osterman will pay some attention to this part of his ward.
