Pizer Funeral Home Tear Down Begins, Demolition Rumors About Strip Mall Across Street

Wednesday, May 7, 2014
By Daniel Zagotta

pizer2The Pizer funeral home which has been vacant for over a decade finally meets its demise. Green barricades have been set up for the planned tear down that could happen as soon as this week. All glass windows have been removed from the structures and crews have been working to prep for the demolition.

The plan is to build a strip mall that meets standards set forth by the alderman’s office and community members. This will include a one story structure with no alley access and parking behind the complex away from the street. Talks are supposedly in the works with Chipolte but no official word has been given. Word is there is a search for an anchor tenant for the mall.

Now, rumors have been flying about a possible tear down of the mall across the street (which is owned by the same company as the Pizer property) as well. The mall currently houses several tenants including Murray’s Auto parts, a PNC Bank and one of the Buzz’s favorite eateries Pizzeria Aroma. There has been no confirmation on this, but it would not happen anytime soon if it were the case. Some say it could be a new prospect tear down for the CTA red line reconstruction or a new retail/housing development.

Though few community members have expressed excitement for another strip mall, most are still interested to see which corporations and small businesses the landlord can attract.

Trader Joe’s, please, for the funeral home site. And leave Pizzeria Aroma alone.

I think the neighborhood would riot if Pizzeria Aroma was forced to leave. LOL. Love that pizza.

Please attract promising businesses…need great sold anchor Trader Joe’s? …..the strip mall across the street does not service the neighborhood. Get going alderman’s office…attract busy up in our hood.

    • zz4j9m

I don’t have a lot of hope for promising businesses based on some of the recent new ones. All retail space will eventually be occupied by CVS and Sleepy’s, I’m convinced. Zzzz. (Although I do recognize that anything is better than empty…it would just be nice to have some retail to get excited about.)

cash 4 gold, subway, another pet store, subway, nail salon, etc

        • zz4j9m

Yep, you know what I’m sayin’, kela.

  • kela

seriously, who is excited about a new strip mall. This whole thing has been a disaster and sets the neighborhood back decades.

    • duppie

Too bad that the few residents abutting the property get to decide what is best for the entire neighborhood by demanding a one-story development.

  • Sam

    I vote for Trader Joe’s!

  • duppie

Hopefully the Mrurray strip mall will be torn down and replace with a TOD development. It is steps away from the Berwyn L stop and would qualify for TOD reductions in parking quota.

    • kela

yep. and how many times does TJ and the alderman need to make it clear. THEY AREN’T INTERESTED IN EDGEWATER. Demographics matter, that’s why increasing the market rate housing numbers matter. Another strip mall is going the wrong direction.

Are we really still on the Trader Joe’s kick? It’s a glorified Aldi, which Edgewater already has. Move on.

    • zz4j9m

You don’t understand. Someone has to call for a Trader Joe’s whenever there is news of a vacancy or teardown. Get with the tradition! :)

      • Turbo60640

I’m intimately familiar with the “tradition,” trust me.

I am the owner of Pizzeria Aroma. Allow me to say this. In today’s current lending climate, even these developers cannot get money without leases of national tenants in place. The idea that they really have not lined up tenant is quite simply misinformation intended to create the illusion that the community somehow we’ll have some type of input on who goes there. These developers only care about net profit and limited liability. Whatever company is going to give them the most money per square foot while having the strongest and most stable financials will get the space. Lance Chody and Bart Friedman aren’t amateurs and are experienced and resourceful developers who have a big rolodex of contacts. They”ll fill that space who they want you. and my experience has been the higher you move up the food chain in real estate, the last honestyand transparency you will find. Just imagine what Donald sterling and Donald Trump are like.I appreciate the love 4 pizzeria aroma. Rest assured no matter what happens, we aren’t going anywhere
