I’m a resident of the 5700 block of Winthrop and find this really scary. Where is CPD in our neighborhood? I never, never see patrol cars at night. I’m scared to walk my dog!!

I think we had a really great police presence all summer. I walk my dog at all hours of the night and see them coming down glenlake, down sheridan, up and down the streets. Last summer there were six or seven shootings, I think we’re improving again.

Which is not to say that I don’t agree that we could always use more!

KW – When walking your dog, if you see something say something. Do not be afraid to call 991 for any type of suspicious activity. This will increase the police presence in our neighborhood.

** 911 sorry, my typing skills are not up to par this morning, was not able to sleep after this shooting last night (as I also am a resident of the 5700 block)

I have lived in this neighborhood for 15 years and it seems recently I see a lot of news on gangs in this neighborhood. What can we do as a group to bring this back to a clean, friendly, safe neighborhood?

        • Meredith

Get involved! There is a Positive Loitering event Sept. 25th at 7pm, meeting at the northeast corner of Broadway and Thorndale.

Tribine says he lived on Oakley, not Winthrop

    • jbressman

      The Trib story states Winthrop.

  • SharonLee

I live in Edgewater for 15 years and had not thought about gangs. How can I find out more about what is going on in my community and help get it cleaned up?

Remove any subsidized housing (other than senior) from the neighborhood, take away welfare from any family that has a criminal in it, stop subsidizing birth rates of the welfare population by giving them Medicaid and food stamps, make everybody, who is on any type of welfare, do something for the City (e.g., clean the streets, parks, CTA buses and trains), and it will solve the majority of our neighborhood problems.

We need to organize a group through our Alderman. Any suggestions on how we can get started bringing in more owners and businesses in the area.

allow residents from east sheridan road to join your block club?

      • xa

        get an alderman who cares

    • oogernomicon

Indeed. A homeless explosion solves everything.

    • Raphe Cheli

Oh, boy. You really know how to fix things in the neighborhood and society. You should run for alderman!

ASCO representatives were told by the Commander of the 24th district last night that the flag-down of the police car was at Granville and Broadway and that was why there were so many squad cars there. This is the reason for the yellow tape. There was not a second shooting at Granville and Broadway.

Too many bad apartment buildings still remain in that area. The only solution to the violence is to push out the people who generate it, and that means riding herd on badly-run apartment buildings. MAS used to maintain a list of bad buildings online, and yanked their operators into housing court for code violations, neighborhood endangerment, and harboring criminal activity. Osterman needs to do the same.
