Know No Limits Gym’s Future Unclear… For Now

Wednesday, June 25, 2014
By Daniel Zagotta

gym1Over last weekend, EveryBlock was buzzing about Know No Limits gym closing. According to the reports, some people were being told that it would be locking its doors for good at the end of the month. Of course, many people were unhappy about this possibility.

It seems though that this may not be the case. EVB has learned that the gym is in the works to be changing ownership and  that the deal, if finalized, should be completed by the end of the month.

This is welcome news for its members, as the local community gym they have come to love may be getting a second wind. Know No Limits was started back in the mid 90s by Karla Shelton when she opened her doors to the masses. The focus was to give people a quality gym with a welcoming experience.  When Karla had the opportunity to move the business  to 6125 N Clark several years ago, she took the shot.

Through the years Karla has become a friendly face in the community so it is not surprising that many people are sad to see her sell the business. She talked with EVB and admitted that rents in the area have gotten too high for her and the current business model. She feels it is time to bring in fresh blood to carry the gym into the future.

“I love our members and I love fitness. These people make me happy to get out of bed each morning”, Ms. Shelton said. “It has been  important to run a gym where people can workout, feel great,  and take good care of themselves, especially as we age.”

Moving onto her next chapter, Karla admits she will still be around teaching and personal training. Her love of fitness and the people she helps each day is very strong. As for now, members can buy a daily pass until the change of hands is completed.

Before moving to Andersonville, Know No Limits’ original location was in West Lakeview. For the first few years, it was located on Lincoln just south of Addison. Just an FYI.

      Thanks so much Stephen.

It’s disconcerting to hear that a quality business like this is changing hands because rents are getting too high. The secret’s out about what a great neighborhood Andersonville/Edgewater is. I just hope it doesn’t end up driving away more of the people who made it so attractive to begin with.

I don’t understand how rents are going up, all the storefronts in that area are empty…..

I hope the business can stay. It’s a great gym, friendly people, great space with parking too. The Ashland/Clark area will changing in the next few years with the New Petersen Metra station, Edgewater Hospital changing and a new condo building across from Gethsemene gardens going up. All of these changes will bring more homeowners and renters to the area which will help bring increased business to KNL.

There are a lot of holes in the story. Just because the rent is going up all of a sudden you need to close the business? Why not move into one of the many vacant properties all up-and-down Clark Street? I suspect this business has been losing money for quite some time. A simple rent increase should not cause all of this.
