HomeMade Pizza Co. Closes All Locations Including Andersonville

Tuesday, June 3, 2014
By Daniel Zagotta

HomeMade Pizza Co.It is still a mystery. What exactly happened to HomeMade Pizza Co.? No one knows for sure but a clue comes to us from data that shows companies that focused on take home and delivery pizza slumped the past year. The companies website and Facebook page also have vanished.

HomeMade had about 22 retail locations and at its height were all around Chicago land and a couple other states. The company began in 1997 when brothers-in-law Eric Fosse and Eric Weinstein opened their first location. They flourished but eventually decided to sell the company to investors which included Pritzker family heir, Matthew Pritzker.

“After bringing in large outside investors several years ago, I was ready to step back and move into the next phase of my career. The investors brought in new leadership that we’d hoped would allow HomeMade to grow and prosper well into the future. Unfortunately for all involved, the strategy they embraced did not succeed,” Mr. Fosse explained in a Tribune article.

There was no announcements of the company being up for sale in the past and no reports of financial trouble. It is rumored that the company could no longer support its own debt. Other pizza companies have had money problems in the recent past including Chicago-based Giordano’s chain. Most recently Sbarro filed for bankruptcy earlier this year.

The Andersonville location located at 5303 North Clark is now permanently closed. HomeMade die hard fans loved the philosophy of pizzas made at the store with fresh ingredients that they would take home and bake in their own ovens. However, that support was not enough to save the chain. That prime space at Clark and Berwyn, which many feel is the heart of the Andersonville strip will certainly be desirable for another business.

I remember about a year ago they stopped doing coupons altogether – that might have been the first sign of trouble.

This concept was so stupid. Why would I want to pay so much money for a pizza I have to cook myself?

    • Bob

Yeah, it was so stupid it worked since 1997. And it’s still working fantastically for other companies doing the same thing, like Papa Murphy’s. There are a lot of factors that go into a business failing. It being “stupid” or something that didn’t float your particular boat is not one of them.

Well actually, I’m almost certain that Homemade Pizza Co. was one of the Andersonville businesses that committed wage theft against its employees. Pretty shameful. I think Arise Chicago had to go after them to get the employees paid. Furthermore, Ibelieve they retaliated against some employees when they objected to using OLD and NOT FRESH ingredients on the pizzas.

    Good riddens!

      It’s riddance. Just sayin.

It was a horrible company to work for. It’s no surprise they sunk. This article made my night.
