I was going to say that Sally. I thought I had heard that businesses can deter crime, and a park might increase it, a mix sounds like a great idea as well. There needs to be some "new" developments around here.

I think a combination commercial space and park space is a good idea since it gives us the best of both proposals. My main concern about the park is safety. We hear "park" and we think of green spaces and children playing but the reality is that gangs could hang out there and the park could become a horrible detriment to our neighborhood. We need to be realistic and think hard about this. If there is going to be a park we need to be very concerned about safety.

Chitownguy and Tim are correct. There is no way a park will replace the hospital. A mix of commercial, residential and some green is the only way anything will happen. Do you know how much it will cost to acquire the hospital?

I will be in attendance at this event because I want to make it known that our neighborhood isn't 100% park-only. I envision park space AND commercial development on that side of Ashland. To use this opportunity just for park space would be unwise if we, as residents, want a diverse tax base.

Hey Im all for open space in our community, but I am wondering why the entire site has to be a park? would the exploration of a park and some sort of new private development along Ashland (that btw might help pay for the park's development…) be more beneficial to our community? What about creating a space that is more like a square, an urban oasis that has opportunities for gathering? Lets think a bit more outside the box and find a solution that 1. helps pay for the development of a new park and 2. doesnt lose a potential for new private development in our community. I will be at this meeting.

The only stupid idea is not thinking outside the box at all. If everyone was complacent with their community, this would be a very borring bland world indeed.

Just to clarify, a park on the site isn't a done deal (Friends of West Edgewater Park is still working on funding), but this is a great opportunity for the community to voice their opinions on what features they'd like to see if the park becomes a reality!
I, for one, would love to see a community garden and some passive space for picnics/relaxation.
