Gunfire near Glenlake/Kenmore in broad daylight

Saturday, August 27, 2011
By Jeremy Bressman

We’re receiving reports via email, Facebook and EveryBlock Chicago of gunfire in the area just after 1pm. Specifically, we’ve heard of multiple gunshots (possibly a gun fight) and at least 3 people with guns near Glenlake and Kenmore and lots of Chicago Police Department activity as in the general vacinity and as far north as Granville. Thankfully there are no reports of injuries. If anyone has further info please post in the comments or email us.

There were at least 10 shots fired. Sounds like it was between two rival groups, (although a small number of people involved). No injuries. I don’t know if anyone has been placed in custody by the police. I know they did have the area blocked off for awhile and recovered some evidence from the shootings.

I was there. I walked into my gate about 6 second before the shooting, it was extra loud! Definitely 10 or more  shots. I thought this was a good area, guess not.

Mike – It just has been problematic lately. I have been right around the corner for 8 years, and this is the first year it has been this bad.

20 years ago, it use to be this bad, but it had been cleaned up.

I would encourage anyone seeing anything that seems out of place/odd or suspicious to them to call 911. I have had our Alderman and Police officers tell me that if you wonder for even a few seconds if you should call 911, then do it.

Started around 1:10 pm. Very loud. Many people running east on Glenlake to escape the violence including a child with a bike trying to keep up with her mother who was pushing a stroller. My partner had just walked east down Glenlake about an hour prior to this. I am so grateful she was not around there when the gunfire erupted and grateful that no other people were injured. I am so sick of this. Putting out hotspots creates hotspots elsewhere and now it’s around Glenlake. The goal is to get RID of the bangers NOT move them around. So much for the added “security” on Thorndale because now, what is going to be done about Glenlake? Bust the landlords who house these criminals, raid the addresses of these KNOWN criminals and SHUT this crap DOWN!

You are right.  And do not call 311.  If you want a patrol car call 911.  If there is the slightest
    smell of trouble call 911.

311 is for broken trees, potholes and if you need Human Services.

  • Proactive Solution

You can also text the police at  “247637″  Type the 3 letters “CPD” and then your message.  Even if you just suspect something is wrong, the police are very receptive.  Action is easier when it is proactive.

Also, I’ve ready many different reports about flowers, gardens, and positive loitering that has been effective.  However, I’ve read no reports that talk about b*tching after-the-fact about people that are not willing to do anything as being effective….  If you wanna clean up your community….  Get out there and do something about it.

I’m so sick of this that I don’t know what to do. These worthless scumbags have just gotten more and more brazen. I mean, a BEAUTIFUL August day with people walking with their kids, dogs and riding bikes RUINED by worthless animals. I have lived in this neighborhood for almost 3 years now, and this neighborhood used to be a wonderful and safe place to live, filled with predominantly young working professionals, students and families (and still IS mostly). Now you can’t even enjoy a beautiful summer day! The bottom line is that people need to STOP USING DRUGS! That is what fuels this kind of violence! And ENOUGH with the “no snitchin’” bullcrap. These cowards aren’t s@#$! We need to stand up and tell them we don’t tolerate them! Call 911 and stop supporting their criminal enterprises!

At one of the 2433 beat meetings I attended a while back, the 024
Commander repeatedly told residents to call 911 for ANY activity they didn’t
like. Citywide, it’s true that the police are understaffed.  But there are enough officers patrolling our area at any given time to fix this problem in a hurry if decent people would alert them.  Don’t wait until casual loitering becomes suspicious activity — in the Commanders words, “If you see someone outside your building you don’t think should be there, call us.”

I understand the hesitation of some who feel it’s profiling to suspect every group of black male teens as lawbreakers, but anyone who reads the news knows this summer’s crimes have been committed by individuals and groups of age, race and gender.  More importantly, the way someone speaks, acts and dresses has far more to do with spotting troublemakers than skin color.  Even if you don’t witness criminal activity but common sense tells you the potential for danger is there, *please* feel comfortable calling 911 (or, as another comenter suggested, texting 247637 and begin with “CPD”) .  Soon enough, the records of calls will affect patrol patters and these thugs will move somewhere they aren’t being monitored so closely.

Thanks for keeping us informed, Edgeville Buzz!
